QualTex Laboratories, a BioBridge Global company, screens millions of blood and plasma donations each year and provides other biological testing for customers around the world. For those customers, the quality of the service depends on more than accurate testing. They also need timely, understandable information about where their samples are, how individual tests are progressing, and whether an issue requires attention.
QualTex partnered with Traust to create the QualTex Sample Tracker, a customer-facing product built on Oracle APEX. The application turns complex testing activity into a clear, responsive experience—and gives QualTex another way to differentiate itself through transparency and customer service.
That product focus gave QualTex greater control over the application after launch. Administrators can adapt user-facing language and content as needs evolve, while client organizations can manage their own users and access. A fully branded interface makes each interaction a cohesive part of the QualTex customer experience.
Behind that experience is an architecture capable of refreshing approximately 5.2 million laboratory records every 15 minutes without slowing customers down.
Better Visibility, Better Service
A single sample may require several tests, each moving independently through the laboratory. Customers need to understand the overall status of the sample while also seeing the progress of every test associated with it.
The Sample Tracker brings that information together in one place. Customers can search for up to 100 sample IDs at once, filter the results, and expand each sample to see its individual tests. A clear four-stage tracker shows whether each item has been submitted, processed, is in progress, or has been released.
Warning and critical indicators make potential delays easy to recognize. Rather than presenting an unexplained error, the application tells customers what happened, when the issue was identified, and whether action is required from QualTex or the client. A searchable glossary explains statuses, exceptions, and testing terminology.
The result is more than convenient access to data. It gives customers greater confidence and control throughout the testing process while helping QualTex deliver the timely communication and responsive support that distinguish a strong laboratory partner.
Delivering More Than a Deliverable
Traust treated the Sample Tracker as a long-term business asset from the start. As a customer-facing application, it would become part of the service QualTex provides. Every search, status update, and exception notice is a customer interaction—and another opportunity to reinforce the qualities QualTex prides itself on: accuracy, timeliness, quality, and attentive service.
The Sample Tracker was therefore designed as a true extension of the QualTex brand. Its visual identity gives customers confidence that they are working within a secure, intentional QualTex environment, while the clarity and consistency of the experience reinforce the organization behind it. Instead of feeling like a third-party utility attached to the testing process, the application strengthens a unified customer relationship with QualTex.
The Sample Tracker was also designed to serve multiple customer organizations. Single sign-on verifies each user’s identity, while role- and client-based permissions segregate data by organization and testing center so customers see only the samples they are authorized to access.
“We don’t look at software as simply software; we look at it as a product,” says David Lopez Abugattas, APEX Practice Director at Traust. “That means paying attention to every detail—from the customer experience on the front end to how the application performs in production.”
The product mindset also extends beyond appearance. QualTex administrators can manage users and testing-center access while maintaining field labels, status descriptions, glossary content, exception definitions, and other customer-facing language. As terminology or customer needs change, QualTex can evolve the experience without bringing in a developer to update individual pages.
Built-in reporting on usage, errors, page performance, and customer feedback gives the team tools to monitor the application and continue improving it after launch. Dedicated QA before user acceptance testing—an area the QualTex team specifically recognized for its thoroughness—helped ensure that the initial release lived up to the same standard.
Performance Without the Wait
Of course none of that customer value matters if the application is slow or the information is stale.
The Sample Tracker draws from approximately 5.2 million records that must be refreshed throughout the day. Rebuilding such a large dataset while customers were actively searching it created a significant technical challenge: QualTex needed current information without making users wait for the refresh process.
Traust evaluated several approaches before implementing a blue-green data architecture. While one version of the dataset remains available to customers, another is refreshed in the background. Once the new data is ready, the application can switch to it without interrupting the customer experience.
Production use uncovered additional demands, including overlapping (ETL) refresh jobs, database contention, excessive logging, and indexes that added more overhead than value. Traust conducted a rapid, comprehensive performance-tuning effort across the application, database, refresh processes, and Oracle Cloud environment, examining how each component affected the system as a whole.
By streamlining the indexing strategy, optimizing refresh jobs, and tuning the underlying database structures, the team made it possible to refresh approximately 5.2 million records every 15 minutes while keeping the application responsive.
Built to Extend
After the initial product was delivered, QualTex asked Traust to make the same consolidated sample information available to other systems, including tools supporting customer-service processes.
Traust developed a REST API using Oracle REST Data Services, allowing authorized non-Oracle systems to retrieve the Sample Tracker’s current data. This extended the solution beyond a single application, supporting an existing third-party BioBridge Global system while creating a reusable foundation for future integrations.
A Differentiated Customer Experience
The QualTex Sample Tracker gives customers one intuitive place to find samples, follow individual tests, understand exceptions, and determine whether action may be required. Just as importantly, it gives QualTex a new way to demonstrate the quality, transparency, and responsiveness of its service.
Delivered on time and on budget, the application combines a distinctly QualTex customer experience with the performance required to keep millions of records current. Beyond simply reporting what is happening in the laboratory, it helps QualTex build trust, provide better service, and stand apart from other testing providers.
